When Ralston failed to appear at work in Aspen, the initial concern was expressed to friends, who eventually contacted the Aspen Police Department. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department got involved, as did Aspen Mountain Rescue, a volunteer organization that had been operating in the region for decades and that Ralston would eventually join as a volunteer in the years after his rescue.

The geographic challenge was immediate: Aspen and Blue John Canyon are in different states, separated by more than 200 miles. Ralston’s whereabouts were completely unknown. The investigation that eventually pointed to Wayne County, Utah — tracing his credit card activity to fuel purchases in Glenwood Springs and grocery purchases in Moab — was detective work, not a known itinerary. Each step of the geographic narrowing required time and coordination that a simple written itinerary could have replaced in minutes.

Once the focus shifted to southeastern Utah, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and the National Park Service became the primary operational responders. Rangers found Ralston’s maroon Toyota pickup truck near the trailhead, which narrowed the search area significantly. But Blue John Canyon is an eleven-mile slot canyon with numerous tributary branches. Without knowing which part of the canyon he had entered or how far he had descended, the search team faced a challenging prospect: aerial surveillance that could not see into slot canyons, and ground search that would require significant manpower to cover the territory systematically.

The resolution of the search through the Meijer family encounter illustrates a principle of wilderness rescue: the search is often most effective when the person being searched for can do something to assist. Ralston had survived long enough to move himself from the pinch point to a trail where rescuers could reach him by helicopter. That movement — the result of the decision and the physical achievement of the hike — was the factor that made the rescue possible in the timeframe it occurred.
