## Viking Age Warfare: Who Fought and Why

Situating the Bj 581 individual within the broader context of Viking Age warfare requires care, because the term “Viking warfare” encompasses a wide range of activities that carried different social implications.

The raid — the seasonal expedition to plunder coastal settlements or monasteries — was the most dramatically represented form of Viking Age violence in contemporary and later sources. It was carried out by relatively small groups of warriors, sometimes led by warlords seeking to build wealth and reputation, sometimes organized by regional rulers. The warriors who participated were typically free men of some means — they needed to equip themselves and to have the freedom to travel for months at a time.

But the Viking Age also included larger-scale military operations: the major campaigns in England, France, and Ireland; the Varangian service to the Byzantine emperor; the defense of trading settlements like Birka. These larger operations required organization, logistics, and leadership at a different scale from the hit-and-run raid. They required people who could coordinate warriors, plan movements, manage equipment and supplies, and make tactical decisions.

The gaming-set interpretation of Bj 581 is specifically connected to this second, larger-scale military context. The researchers’ argument is that the gaming set, positioned in the deceased’s lap, signals someone whose role in military activity was organizational — someone who commanded and planned rather than simply fought. The games associated with Viking Age military culture were, in this interpretation, tools for practicing and demonstrating strategic thought.

This interpretation has merit, and it has critics. The critics’ point — that gaming sets in burials could signal elite status without specifically indicating military command — is well taken. The distinction between a high-status warrior and a high-status military commander is real, and the grave goods may be insufficient to determine which category applies.
