## Danny Trejo Day and the City’s Recognition
On January 31, 2020, the City of Los Angeles declared it Danny Trejo Day, honoring his contributions to the city’s communities. The declaration was made by the Los Angeles City Council and reflected the sustained relationship between Trejo and the city — not the city as an abstract political entity but the specific communities within it that his work had touched over decades.
The recognition was not primarily for the Sylmar rescue, though the FOX 11 coverage of the event noted that the rescue had been part of the context. The broader recognition was for the sustained work: the drug counseling going back to 1973, the speaking engagements in juvenile halls and detention facilities, the homeless outreach, the return visits to the prisons where he had once been incarcerated, the restaurant business that employed local people and served local neighborhoods, the pandemic food donations.
The Los Angeles City Council’s declaration is a specific kind of official recognition — less formal than a commendation and more symbolic than an award, but meaningful in the specific context of a city that has many people doing community work and that does not often stop to recognize it. The recognition confirmed what the communities in question already knew: that this was someone who had been showing up, consistently, for a very long time.
The year before — in 2019, before the pandemic and during the period of the Sylmar rescue — Trejo had spoken at his Fresno City College Speakers Forum event, in the kind of institutional speaking engagement that he has maintained alongside the more informal juvenile hall visits. These formal engagements provide a platform for the same message he delivers in the less formal settings, with the addition of a college audience that may not have the same immediate vulnerability as a juvenile hall audience but that benefits from the same direct account of what it cost to live the way he lived and what it took to change it.
