This inconsistency in coverage is worth noting because it reflects something true about how news coverage handles the people who are not already famous. Trejo was there because he had a press relationship and a recognizable name and a cultural persona that made the story irresistible. Jackson was there because she crawled through a car window and undid a car seat buckle that Trejo couldn’t reach.

Without Jackson’s action, the child would not have been freed from the car seat. This is documented in Trejo’s own account — “I couldn’t get the baby out,” and “A young lady had to crawl through the window because I couldn’t get the baby out.” He attributed the essential act to her directly, in his on-scene interview. The attribution was part of his public account of what happened.

The news coverage that repeated the story without naming her — or without naming the third bystander who helped open the rear door, or the LAFD firefighters who freed the grandmother — is the ordinary product of news coverage that has a recognizable name to anchor on. It does not reflect Trejo’s own account of the event, which was consistent and credited the collaborative nature of what happened.

This is worth noting for a specific reason: the tendency to transform collaborative emergencies into single-hero stories is a well-documented feature of how emergency events are covered, and it tends to produce an account that is emotionally satisfying and factually incomplete. The rescue in Sylmar was a collaboration. A bystander opened the door. A young woman climbed through a window and undid the buckle. Trejo pulled the child out and kept him calm. The LAFD freed the grandmother. All of these people did their part. The grandmother survived. The child survived. Nobody died. The collaborative account is both the accurate account and, in its way, the more meaningful one: because it describes a situation in which a group of strangers did the right thing, which is a different and perhaps more instructive story than one in which a famous person did everything.
