The rescue tells us something different. It tells us what he does when there is nothing to perform and no one is directing him and the only audience is the surveillance camera he doesn’t know is there.

What he does, in that situation, is what the record says he does: he stops. He assesses. He does the accessible part of what needs doing. He acknowledges what he cannot do. He supports the person who can do the thing he cannot. He keeps the frightened child looking away from the crash and toward something other than fear. He stays until the professionals arrive and the situation is handled.

These are not the actions of a character. They are the actions of a person who has had fifty years of practice in helping people through difficulty. The practice, in this case, transferred across contexts — from the counseling room and the juvenile hall and the recovery center to the intersection of Hubbard and Jackman on a Wednesday afternoon in August.

The films will outlast the man, in the way that recorded performances outlast their performers. The Machete image will continue to circulate. Heat will be watched by people who are born after Trejo is gone. The accumulated character roles — the prisoners and criminals and bodyguards and enforcers — will continue to exist in the archive of American cinema.

But the rescue — the specific collaborative act on August 7, 2019, in Sylmar — is the thing that cannot be performed after the fact. It happened or it didn’t. The surveillance camera recorded what was there. And what was there was someone who had been practicing, every day for fifty years, exactly the kind of orientation that the situation required.

That is the distance between the reel and the real. The reel shows what can be constructed with craft and commitment and a camera and a story. The real shows what is there when none of those things are present and the situation simply asks what you are going to do.

On August 7, 2019, Danny Trejo showed what he was going to do. It was the same thing he had been doing, in various forms, since 1969. The situation was new. The response was not.
