In 1989, Robert Anglin — a surviving brother — said two unidentified men had appeared at the viewing for his and John and Clarence’s late father, wept at the body, and left without identifying themselves. Two women also told investigators they had seen John and Clarence on a farm in Florida, but no traces were found that led to the brothers.
### The Brazil Photograph
In the 1990s, a childhood friend of the Anglins named Fred Brizzi came forward with a photograph reportedly taken in Brazil in 1975 — thirteen years after the escape. The photograph showed two men whom Brizzi claimed were the Anglin brothers, taken at a gathering in Rio de Janeiro.
Forensic analysts hired by the Anglin family examined the photograph and concluded that it was “more than likely” depicting John and Clarence Anglin. The FBI conducted its own analysis. Deputy Marshal Dyke stated that physical measurements taken from the photograph did not match the Anglin brothers. Investigators also noted that Fred Brizzi had a history that did not support treating his testimony as inherently reliable — described in reports as a drug smuggler and con man. After Brizzi’s death, his widow disputed portions of his account of the circumstances under which the photograph was taken.
A 2020 analysis using artificial intelligence image matching was reported by members of the Anglin family’s circle as producing high confidence that the men in the Brazil photo were the Anglins. The methodology of this analysis and the organization that produced it have not been independently verified in peer-reviewed forensic literature.
