The institutional reality of prison culture includes a strong norm against informing — against providing information to guards or administration that could result in the punishment of other inmates. This norm operates across different kinds of institutions, different security levels, and different demographic populations within those institutions. At Alcatraz, an institution housing serious long-term offenders, this norm would have been strongly maintained.

The result was that whatever other inmates knew about the escape plan — whether they heard the drilling, whether they saw the construction, whether they were told about the plan — they did not tell the administration. The months of preparation proceeded in a cellblock with hundreds of other people present and produced no actionable intelligence for the guards.

This collective silence is itself a feature of the escape’s success. The concealment systems were technical: cardboard panels, music hour masking. But the concealment that most directly protected the preparation was cultural: an institutional environment in which the people who might have provided information to the administration chose, for reasons of culture and probably of personal interest, not to do so.

## Three Lives Before the Rock

A complete accounting of the June 1962 escape includes the lives that brought Morris and the Anglin brothers to Alcatraz — not to establish sympathy or to perform condemnation, but because those lives explain the specific capacities and histories they brought to the escape.

Frank Morris’s childhood in institutional settings — orphanage, foster care, the juvenile justice system from age thirteen — provided no foundation of normal social development. It provided, instead, training in a specific kind of situational analysis: understanding institutional environments, their rules, their weaknesses, their patterns. A child who grows up moving through institutions learns those institutions’ logics in ways that children in stable family settings do not. Morris’s intelligence, whatever the specific number of the IQ measurement, was developed in an environment that valued and required situational awareness.
