That said, the emails are not a complete window into the relationship either. Correspondence does not always reflect the full dynamics of a marriage. People can be controlled in relationships without every exchange showing the control. The jury, who heard the full trial and saw all available evidence, concluded that the emails and the other evidence were sufficient to reject the coercion defense beyond reasonable doubt. The Court of Appeal affirmed that conclusion.
What the court record establishes is this: Anne Darwin participated in the fraud actively and continuously for more than five years. She collected the insurance payment. She collected the pension payments. She collected the government benefits. She maintained the story of her husband’s death to her sons, to the media, to the institutions that paid her. She traveled to Panama with him in 2006 and again in 2007. She helped form Jaguar Properties. She was present for the purchase of the El Dorado apartment and the Escobal estate. No one bribed the coroner. The system produced what it was designed to produce given the evidence it could access.
