He Refused to Carry a Weapon. Desmond Doss Was Credited With Saving 75 Men at Okinawa.

**Note on film:** The 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge (Mel Gibson, dir.) is an adaptation. Documented differences from the historical record include: the portrayal of Doss’s father as abusive vs. a depressed carpenter who sometimes drank; Dorothy shown as a nurse when they met vs. becoming a nurse after the war; a depicted beating by fellow soldiers not found in documentary record; absence of the Sabbath delay on May 5; omission of the sniper wound and 300-yard crawl on May 21; and no documented evidence that Doss lowered wounded Japanese soldiers. The film is not cited as historical evidence in this article.
