## The Anatomy of a Disappeared Person

When a person disappears voluntarily in the United States, the response of official systems depends almost entirely on the circumstances of that disappearance. A missing child generates an immediate law enforcement response. A missing adult who has left voluntarily — who has told someone they are leaving, who has not left behind evidence of violence, who is not in obvious danger — does not trigger the same machinery. They are exercising a legal right that adults possess: the right to go somewhere else and not tell anyone where they went.

Kimberly McLean was eighteen when she left Pennsylvania. She had told her mother she was leaving and told her not to look. There was nothing to file, no mechanism for the police to pursue, no grounds for concern that rose above the level of a parent grieving a departure she could not understand. Deanne McLean’s private investigator search was exactly that — private, unofficial, conducted without the databases and legal tools that law enforcement would have had access to.
