## The Larger Story of Interbreeding

Before the Denisova 11 discovery, the evidence for interbreeding between archaic human groups came primarily from population genetics—from the detection of statistical signals in modern human genomes that could not be explained except by past admixture with Neanderthals, Denisovans, or other archaic populations. This kind of evidence is powerful but indirect. It establishes that interbreeding happened, places rough statistical bounds on when and how much, and identifies which modern populations carry the most archaic ancestry. What it cannot do is show you a specific individual who was the product of a specific encounter.

The Slon et al. 2018 study changed that. For the first time, there was not a population-level signal but a person—a genome whose composition could be traced to a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father in a single generation rather than across many generations of diluted inheritance.
