None of this is improvisation in the casual sense of the word — the sense in which someone might improvise a meal from whatever ingredients happen to be in the refrigerator. It is improvisation in the literal sense: finding solutions to novel problems with the tools immediately available. The difference between the two is the stakes attached to getting it wrong.
## The Psychology of Not Dying
The psychological literature on extended solitary confinement and isolation — a body of research that has grown substantially from studies of POW survivors, solo ocean sailors, polar explorers, and individuals subjected to solitary imprisonment — converges on a set of well-documented risks. Hallucination is one. Temporal disorientation is another. The collapse of motivation and the specific despair that comes from the repeated failure of anticipated rescue are among the most dangerous.
Poon Lim’s account of his psychological state during the ordeal, as preserved in the sources that drew on his testimony, is limited and not clinically detailed. He was not a person who gave lengthy psychological self-reports, and the accounts that reconstruct his experience are necessarily filtered through translation, through the mediating influence of whoever was recording his words, and through the gap between what was asked and what was answered.
What the accounts do preserve is a picture of someone who maintained functional cognitive organization throughout the ordeal. The rope-knot calendar, later replaced by moon-counting, suggests a person who was actively managing temporal orientation rather than letting it dissolve. The construction of the secondary survival system — the improvised fishing and water-collection tools — required sequential thinking over extended periods: identifying a problem, designing a solution, testing and refining it. The twice-daily swimming routine from approximately day sixty onward represents a deliberate behavioral intervention to prevent physical deterioration, which implies a level of forward planning that extends beyond the immediate moment.
