His parents arrived in debt. The passage and the process of immigration had cost more than they had. His earnings from his early film work would go in part toward paying those debts — a detail Quan has mentioned in interviews that places the child-actor money in a specific family context. He was not spending it on toys.

## The Casting Call That Changed Everything

In 1983, Steven Spielberg was in pre-production on *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom*, the sequel to *Raiders of the Lost Ark*. The script called for a young boy — a resourceful, wisecracking kid who would serve as Indiana Jones’s companion throughout the film’s Asian-set adventure. The character, Short Round, would need to be nimble, funny, and physically capable. Finding the right kid was a problem.

Spielberg held an open casting call after an earlier search had not produced the right candidate. Ke Huy Quan came to that casting call not because he was pursuing an acting career but because his brother was going, and he went along. He was eleven or twelve years old.

Spielberg, recounting the casting decades later, said that Quan “took the room by storm.” He described the casting as serving the movie rather than giving anyone a break — the standard professional framing — but the impression Quan made was apparently immediate and definitive. He had no prior acting credits. He had tagged along to his brother’s audition. He left with the part.

What Spielberg saw in that room — the quality that translated from a casting session in 1983 to a Hollywood career and then, decades later, to an Oscar — the filmmakers who worked with him on *Everything Everywhere All at Once* would later describe as a kind of watchability: a quality that makes audiences want to look at someone and want that person to be okay. The Daniels (directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) put it in those terms when discussing what drew them to Quan for the Waymond Wang role. It is the same quality Spielberg recognized in 1983, and it is not something that years away from the camera could extinguish.
