Between Ngor’s win in 1985 and Quan’s in 2023, no Asian man won an individual acting Oscar in any category. That gap — thirty-eight years — is not a period of equal opportunity in which Asian male performers simply did not produce work worthy of recognition; it is a period in which the structural conditions of Hollywood casting limited what roles were available, which roles received awards attention, and which performances the Academy’s voting membership was prepared to reward.

Miyoshi Umeki won Best Supporting Actress in 1957. The ceremony at which Quan won also saw Michelle Yeoh become the first Asian woman to win Best Actress — sixty-six years after Umeki’s win in the same category. The clustering of Asian recognition at the 2023 Oscars represents a specific historical moment, not the culmination of a steady progression.

The sixty-six years and the thirty-eight years are the data. The conditions that produced those gaps are the subject that lies beneath Quan’s story and that his story illuminates by contrast.

## What *Everything Everywhere* Actually Is

*Everything Everywhere All at Once* is, on its surface, a science-fiction action-comedy about a Chinese-American woman who runs a laundromat and discovers she is the only person who can save the multiverse. On a somewhat deeper level, it is a film about a mother-daughter relationship, about the immigrant experience of sacrificing certain possibilities in pursuit of certain other possibilities, and about whether nihilism is a reasonable response to the chaos and pain of existence.

The Daniels — the directing team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — made the film as a meditation on joy as a response to meaninglessness. The villain, Jobu Tupaki, is a person who has experienced too much of the multiverse and can no longer find meaning in any version of it; the film’s argument is that Evelyn’s love for her daughter, her capacity for connection and joy, is the answer to that nihilism, even if — especially if — it cannot be logically defended.
