## The Mechanics of a Working Childhood
There is a specific kind of knowledge that children who work professionally develop early and that children who do not work professionally rarely develop at all: the knowledge of what they are worth on the open market at any given moment, and the knowledge that this worth is contingent, variable, and can disappear without explanation or appeal.
Leighton Meester began accumulating this knowledge at ten years old. The Atlanta convention that led to her signing was not a fluke — it was a structured market event, organized precisely to surface children whose commercial value was not yet reflected in their careers, and to connect them with agents who could begin the process of converting that value into bookings. The agent who signed her on the spot was making a professional judgment: this child, in this moment, was commercially viable.
