These were not the activities of a person whose significance began and ended with sixty seconds on an Oscar stage. They were the activities of a person who had committed to specific causes before the stage, continued those commitments after the stage, and built a life around them that had no particular need of Hollywood’s validation to be meaningful.

She was featured in the 2010 documentary Reel Injun, which examined Hollywood’s representation of Native Americans. She appeared in the 2018 documentary Sacheen: Breaking the Silence, which focused on her life and activism. She gave interviews across the decades that returned repeatedly to the 1973 ceremony — not because it was the whole of her story, but because it was the moment in which her story became legible to the broadest audience.

She told one interviewer: “I was not pushed out. I was pushed in.” The distinction she was making was not trivial. Being excluded from Hollywood was not, from her perspective, a loss that diminished her. It was a condition that directed her energy toward work that she found more important.

## Hollywood’s Image Problem: The Hollywood Indian in Context

Brando’s protest and Littlefeather’s speech arrived in the context of a specific and well-documented history of Indigenous misrepresentation in American film — a history that predated the 45th Academy Awards by decades and that the entertainment industry had, in various ways, recognized and largely declined to address.

The “Hollywood Indian” was a creation of the early film industry that drew on the conventions already established by dime novels, Wild West shows, and a visual tradition in which Native Americans appeared primarily as obstacles or curiosities in stories centered on white expansion. These portrayals required no authenticity: they needed a visual shorthand — feather headdresses, war paint, whooping sounds — that audiences would recognize as signifying “Indian,” regardless of which tribal nation, region, or tradition was supposedly being depicted.
