Several things changed in the years leading up to the 2022 apology. The broader movement for institutional reckoning with racial injustice that intensified after 2020 affected many institutions, including Hollywood studios and awards organizations. The Academy’s own response to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in 2016 — which had prompted significant membership diversification efforts — was part of a larger process of institutional self-examination that the organization was undergoing.

The Academy’s Indigenous Alliance, co-chaired by producer Bird Runningwater — Cheyenne and Mescalero Apache — was one product of that self-examination. The existence of an Indigenous Alliance within the Academy is a structural fact that would have been difficult to imagine in 1973, when the organization’s leadership did not meaningfully reflect the communities whose representations it was in the business of adjudicating.

By 2022, the ingredients for a formal apology existed. The institutional will had developed. The individual in question — Sacheen Littlefeather — was alive, in her seventies, and reachable. The moment had arrived in which the calculation of institutional reputation, combined with a genuine shift in how at least some parts of the Academy understood their responsibilities, produced a specific decision: to apologize.

The apology arrived almost exactly as described in the sources. In June 2022, Academy President David Rubin sent Littlefeather a formal letter. He called the abuse she had endured “unwarranted and unjustified.” He offered the Academy’s “deepest apologies” and its “sincere admiration.” He committed the organization to making Indigenous voices visible and respected contributors to film, guided by the Academy’s Indigenous Alliance.

This was not an apology to Brando. It was not a statement about the Oscar itself, which had not been rescinded or returned; it remained an award for performance in a specific film, the merit of which was not in question. It was an apology specifically about how Sacheen Littlefeather had been treated on March 27, 1973, and in the period immediately following.
