## What I Told Helen at the Community Meals Meeting

I am not called Helen at the community meals meetings. My name is Helen. I am not telling anyone what I told myself. I want to tell you about a moment at the November planning meeting, the one that happened about a month after the Thanksgiving dinner.

Ruth and I arrived at the same time, which was coincidence or habit by then, and we got coffee and found our usual seats at the planning table. The meeting started with the budget review, which I was leading that month, and we went through the numbers and the upcoming delivery schedule and the volunteer coordination for December, which is always the busiest month.

At one point I looked up from the spreadsheet and Ruth was looking at me with a particular expression. Not warm exactly. More like: recognition. The expression of a person who is thinking about something larger than the spreadsheet while still being fully present for the spreadsheet.

After the meeting, packing up, she said: “Seven months ago I didn’t know you existed.”

“Seven months ago,” I said, “you thought I was dead.”

“Neither of which,” she said, “was accurate.”

We looked at each other for a moment.

“What a strange year,” I said.

“What a strange year,” she agreed.

We walked out together into the November parking lot, and she got in her car and I got in mine, and we drove home in opposite directions, and I thought about the specific strangeness of the year in a way that felt, for the first time, more like gratitude than grievance.
