## What I Made for the Wedding I Attended

The dress I wore to Elise’s wedding was not a statement. I want to be clear about that. I did not make a dress for her wedding to make a point about making dresses. I made it because I had a wedding to attend in ten weeks and I needed something to wear and buying something felt strange when I had fabric in my apartment and the skills to use it.

It is a simple shift-style dress in a navy silk charmeuse that I had bought the previous year for a project that didn’t materialize. The construction is clean: French seams, a centered invisible zipper, a hem done with a silk thread so fine you can’t see it from the outside. No embroidery. No embellishment. Just the dress.

I wore it with low-heeled shoes and earrings that had been my grandmother’s. I looked like someone who takes weddings seriously without needing to perform seriousness.

Elise’s comment — ‘the dress you’re wearing tonight is also really good’ — happened as I was leaving. It made me laugh, as I said. It was the right thing for her to say, and she said it in the right register: not heavy, not a statement, just genuine and a little funny. As though after everything, she saw me clearly enough to know I would appreciate being seen for the craft rather than for the symbolism.

Maybe she has always seen me that way. Maybe the whole problem was exactly that: she saw me clearly enough to know the dress was extraordinary and wanted it badly enough to not look closely at what wanting it would cost.
