This is the part I’ve sat with longest. Elise knew. She didn’t ask. She told herself a story about why she didn’t need to ask, and she let that story carry her forward into fittings and plans and timelines while I had no idea any of it was happening.

## The Morning I Found Out

The pipe repair finished in April. I called my mother to say I’d come pick up the dress on Saturday.

“Oh,” she said. “About that.”

“About what?”

Silence. A particular kind of silence that my mother uses when she is buying time to find the version of a story that causes the least friction.

“Elise has been using it for her fittings.”

I was in my car, in a parking garage, about to go into work. I turned off the engine.

“What do you mean she’s been using it for her fittings.”

“I thought it made more sense,” my mother said. “You already have your wedding. She needs a dress. It’s just sitting there.”

“It’s just sitting there because I left it with you while my apartment was being repaired.”

“Mara.”

“I told you she could look at it. I sent you a text. I said she could look at it. For inspiration.”

“She fell in love with it. What was I supposed to do?”

I want to report this conversation accurately, which means acknowledging that I was not calm. I was not shouting, but I was not calm. My voice went tight and controlled in the way that Ben recognizes as the precursor to a longer, quieter fury that is in some ways worse than shouting.
