This is the remark Daniel told me about. His exact words when he told me were: she said something to Mom that I need to address. He addressed it by calling Kira and saying, plainly, that the house was both of theirs and that they were both at home in it, and that the arrangement with Patricia had gone on longer than planned not because of Maya but because he had not moved earlier to resolve the logistics.
He said he told Kira this and she had said she understood.
I do not know exactly what Kira said or exactly how the conversation went. I know what Daniel told me and I know that he made the call, because I could hear him in the other room, his voice at the register he uses when he is saying something he has decided to say rather than something that is coming up organically.
I did not ask him to make that call. He told me he was going to make it and then he made it. This was the correcting-the-record piece I had asked for on the walk, though at the time I had been thinking about the guest remark at the lunch rather than a subsequent remark from a relative I had not heard.
The principle is the same: when an inaccurate framing circulates in the family and my husband is the one with access to correct it, the correction is his to make. He made it.
I have not spoken to Kira directly about it. We exchanged a normal text at Thanksgiving, the kind of text that does not carry the weight of everything else. Normal is often enough.
