This language, in the lender’s written communication, was careful. They did not say “your mother did this.” They said things about the application and the documentation in the kind of language that investigators use when they are establishing facts rather than making accusations. But the facts they were establishing were consistent with everything I had pieced together.

I shared the communication, in summary form, with the lawyer I had consulted with earlier. I had a follow-up conversation about what the findings might mean for the next steps. The lawyer was, again, careful about what she could tell me without doing a full engagement — she reminded me that outcomes in these situations varied, that the lender’s process and any legal process were separate, and that I should continue documenting everything while the process moved forward.

I did not share the communication with my mother or with Luke at that stage. I was still in the middle of the process, and I had learned, in the months since the first phone call, that sharing information before it was settled tended to create conversations I was not ready to have.

## The Rental Application Resolution

At month six, the property manager called me again about the apartment upgrade.

She had been tracking my dispute case. She had a note from months ago with my case number and a follow-up reminder. She called because the unit I had applied for was still available — there had been some delays in their renovation timeline that had, inadvertently, kept it open longer than expected.
