My supervisor noticed once that I seemed distracted and asked if I was okay. I said I was managing something stressful but that it wasn’t affecting my work, and she said she was glad I felt I could say so and that if I needed anything to let her know. That was the extent of it.
I kept it separate from work partly because I valued the separation — having eight hours a day where the thing was not the main thing was genuinely helpful — and partly because I did not yet know how the dispute would resolve, and I did not want to have told the story of a situation that might still shift in ways I could not predict.
Work being fine was important. Work was the place where I was competent at my job and people relied on me and I had clear tasks with clear outcomes. In the months when my personal life was uncertain and grinding and administrative and emotionally complex, having a place where the work was clear and completable was a kind of anchor. I showed up. I scheduled things. I helped people. I went home.
There is something to be said for the ordinary. I said it to myself, frequently, in the middle months. The ordinary continued and I moved through it and that was enough.
## The Credit Report After
When the account finally came off my credit report — a few weeks after the lender’s decision letter — I pulled the report again and looked at it for a long time.
