She had asked me for money before. Not often, and not in large amounts — a few hundred dollars here and there over the years, always framed as temporary, always paid back eventually, always with the specific quality of something that was being done quietly, between us, without Luke knowing, without anyone outside the family knowing. I had given it to her, a few times, when I had it. I had said no, once, when I didn’t, and she had been hurt in the specific way that felt designed to make me feel guilty about having a boundary.

That was the pattern. I knew the pattern. I had named it to Tessa, once, and Tessa had said “that’s a guilt trip” in the plain way that Tessa says true things, and I had known she was right, and I had also kept doing the thing I did with my mother, which was try to stay close while maintaining enough distance not to get completely pulled under.

The $28,000 loan was not that pattern. It was something different. It was outside any framework I had for what my mother would or wouldn’t do.

Which is perhaps why I kept looking for another explanation, even when the evidence was making the other explanations harder and harder to sustain.

## Verification: Making Sure I Was Sure

I did not call my mother first. I spent a week doing what I could to verify my understanding of the situation before I introduced her to it.
