I drove back to my apartment that evening feeling something complicated: not relief exactly, not happiness, not restored. Something more like the feeling of having crossed a significant point and knowing the landscape on the other side would take time to learn.
## Jordan’s Transfer
The transfer process at Willowmere was exactly as Jordan had described: formal, written, and requiring all three parties. She sent over the transfer documentation on the Monday after our meeting, and by Wednesday it was complete.
The document released me from financial responsibility for the remaining seventy-two hundred dollar balance. It named Owen and Claire as the incoming clients jointly, responsible for the payment schedule going forward. It acknowledged that the original twenty-four hundred dollar deposit had been paid by the original client and would not be returned or transferred — it remained with the venue regardless.
I signed the release. Claire and Owen signed their side. Jordan countersigned for the venue.
I received the completed paperwork by email on a Wednesday afternoon, and I forwarded a copy to my personal files and sat for a moment appreciating the fact that I was no longer legally responsible for the event that had, two weeks earlier, represented both a family rupture and a financial exposure.
The twenty-four hundred dollars was gone. That was the price of the lesson, or one way of thinking about it. Another way of thinking about it was that the twenty-four hundred was the price of the commitment I had made in good faith in September, and the good faith was not a mistake even though the circumstances had made it costly.
