I think often about the moment in our phone call when he said: “You’re being very fair to her for someone she uninvited from her wedding.” He said it as an observation, not a criticism or a compliment exactly. More like a recognition of something he was noticing and wanted to name.

I told him I could be angry and fair at the same time. That was true. It is also true that being fair to Claire in that conversation, and in the others that followed, was the choice that made it possible to be where we are now. If I had been primarily interested in making a case, I could have made one. Claire had done something unfair. The documentation was clear. I had the numbers. I had the text thread. I had Becca’s account and the timeline and Owen’s own increasing clarity about what had happened.

But a case is not what I wanted. I wanted my sister. And making a case, in the moment when Owen was finding his own way to the truth, would have been choosing victory over relationship, and I have enough of those in my professional life. In my family, I want something different.

Owen understood that. He was looking for the same thing.

I think they are going to have a good marriage.

## The Check That Came Six Weeks After

Let me tell the story of the check properly, because I glossed over it earlier and it deserves more space.

It arrived in my mailbox on a Thursday, in a white envelope with Claire’s return address. I almost didn’t open it immediately, because I don’t always open mail immediately — a habit left over from years of managing other people’s crises and needing to protect my own bandwidth for the things that actually required attention. But something made me open it on the front steps before I went inside.
