The familiar figure in the Bolzano cold chamber is a genuinely ancient person who lived and died in a specific place at a specific time, in a community that had specific relationships and practices and beliefs we can only partially reconstruct. The science is a tool for getting closer to who he actually was. It does not get us all the way there.

*Meta description:* Scientists resequenced the Iceman’s genome in 2023 and found darker skin, probable baldness, and 90% Anatolian farmer ancestry — revising what a contaminated 2012 analysis had concluded.

*Category:* DNA / Ancient Identity

*Thumbnail hook:* The museum reconstruction showed light skin and thick hair. The DNA said something different — and the mummy itself had been showing it all along.

## The Archive in His Gut: What the Microbiome Tells Us

Beyond his own genome, Ötzi’s body carried an archive of microbial life that has become an independent research thread. The ancient microbiome — the bacterial, viral, and fungal communities living in and on the body at the time of death — preserves a snapshot of the microbial world of Copper Age Europe that has no other comparable source.

The H. pylori finding, discussed above, was the most significant contribution from this archive in terms of human population history. But it was not the only one.

The whipworm infection documented from Ötzi’s gut represents one of the earliest confirmed cases of Trichuris trichiura, a parasitic nematode that infects the large intestine and was widespread in pre-modern human populations. Its presence in Ötzi is consistent with the sanitation conditions of Copper Age communities — shared water sources, animal contact, food handling without modern hygiene practices — but it is not surprising. What is scientifically valuable is simply having a confirmed ancient case to anchor the deep history of this parasite’s relationship with human populations.
