The misidentification was almost certainly innocent. Ferdinand Hiller moved in circles where multiple musicians’ hair samples could plausibly have circulated, and a mixing up of samples—before or after they reached the Hiller family—requires no deliberate deception to explain. The people who preserved the lock across 130 years as a Beethoven relic were acting in good faith on the information available to them. The 1994 acquisition by the American Beethoven Society was conducted with care and scholarly attention, based on the provenance history as it was then understood.
None of this makes the misidentification anything other than a misidentification. The scientific record now shows what the relic trade could not: that a lock’s label and its contents are two separate things, and that only one of them can be tested against independent evidence.
The authenticated Beethoven genome—those five locks in four collections—now provides the baseline. Future claims about Beethoven’s biological material will be testable against it. The unknown woman in the Hiller Lock will likely remain unknown; there is no obvious path to identifying a nineteenth-century woman of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry from a lock of hair without additional information that the historical record has not, thus far, supplied. But her presence in the story has been documented, and the story is now more accurate for including her.
The 2023 study did what it promised to do: it tested the hair. It found what the testing found. It reported those findings with appropriate care about what could and could not be concluded. The Heiligenstadt Testament requested understanding. A genome, carefully extracted and carefully read, is one form of understanding—partial, biological, grounded in evidence, and honest about its limits.
The music asked no such questions of science. The music has not waited for the answers. The music, two hundred years later, is still the most direct record of what Ludwig van Beethoven heard when the world had gone silent around him—and no genome, however carefully sequenced, will ever fully account for that.
