**Note on DOJ and primary sources:** The principal DNA paper (Nature Genetics 1995) was not directly accessible through available research tools; all specific findings attributed to it have been verified through independent secondary scientific sources including the ODU educational document (which provides exact STR and mtDNA figures) and the Penn State press release (which describes the testing team and methodology). The 1994 newspaper reporting from the Roanoke Times and Virginian-Pilot provides contemporaneous independent corroboration of the test announcement and key findings.

## The Romanov Children: Who They Were Before the Claim

Any serious evaluation of the Anna Anderson story requires a clear understanding of who Grand Duchess Anastasia actually was — not the cultural construction that accumulated around the survivor myth, but the documented person.

Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova was born on June 18, 1901, the fourth daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. She was, by the accounts of those who knew her personally, notably energetic, mischievous, and physically compact compared to her older sisters. She was the youngest daughter; her brother Alexei, born in 1904, was the youngest child and the only son.

The children grew up in extraordinary privilege and extraordinary confinement. The family spent much of their time at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, outside St. Petersburg, and at the Livadia Palace in Crimea. Their daily lives were shaped by the demands of the Tsarevich Alexei’s hemophilia — a condition that defined much of the family’s domestic existence and their relationship to Grigori Rasputin, the figure who claimed to be able to ease Alexei’s suffering.
