Even after the August 2020 confrontation, Papini did not confess. She maintained elements of her story. The federal charges were not filed until March 2022, more than a year and a half after the confrontation interview. The intervening period involved continued investigation, the assembly of the documentary and forensic case, and whatever negotiations preceded the eventual plea.

## The False-Abuse Claim and Its Moral Weight

One of the least-discussed dimensions of the Papini case, in the media coverage that surrounded it, was the specific nature of the false accusation she made against Keith Papini to secure James Reyes’s cooperation.

To persuade Reyes to help her — to get him to arrange a rental car, to drive nine hours to pick her up, to house her for three weeks while a massive law enforcement search was conducted — Papini told him that her husband was abusing her.

Keith Papini has consistently denied these allegations. The investigation found nothing to support them. No charges related to domestic abuse were filed against Keith Papini at any point in connection with the case. Reyes provided the account to investigators, and investigators credited it as accurate — the abuse allegation was Papini’s explanation to Reyes, not a fact about Keith.

Keith Papini, in public interviews after the hoax was exposed, said that the false abuse allegation was among the most painful aspects of the case for him. He had spent years supporting a wife who had not only fabricated her abduction but had also, in the process of fabricating it, characterized him to another man as an abuser. That characterization was false. It had been deployed instrumentally, to obtain Reyes’s assistance. And it had been maintained — by implication, by the existence of the relationship with Reyes and the reason for the three-week stay — for years.
