## The Geography of Captivity
One of the questions that emerged most persistently in the public discussion of the case was geographic. How had Jaycee Dugard remained undetected for eighteen years when she was less than 200 miles from her home? She had been taken to Antioch, California, a suburban community in Contra Costa County in the East Bay region, less than two hours by car from South Lake Tahoe when roads were clear.
The geography of captivity in her case was characterized by apparent ordinariness. 1554 Walnut Avenue was not on the outskirts of a city or in a rural region accessible only by unpaved roads. It was in a residential neighborhood. The street had houses on both sides. The community had schools, churches, businesses, and other ordinary features of California suburban life.
