Buscemi’s appearance in the film as a subject — sharing photographs from his Engine 55 years, speaking about the work and about September 11 — was an act of testimony within a larger act of testimony. He was not the central subject; the firefighters were. He was a former member speaking from within the tradition of the institution, which is a different thing from a celebrity making a cameo in someone else’s story.

## The Friends of Firefighters and Mental Health in the FDNY

The mental health challenges facing FDNY firefighters in the years after September 11 were severe and were long inadequately addressed. The culture of the fire service — the emphasis on toughness, on handling the situation, on not burdening colleagues with personal difficulties — created conditions in which firefighters experiencing PTSD, depression, or other mental health challenges were unlikely to seek formal help through FDNY channels. The stigma against psychological difficulty in high-stakes emergency professions is well-documented across firefighting, law enforcement, and military contexts.

Friends of Firefighters was established in 2001 to address this gap by providing mental health services that were entirely independent of the FDNY hierarchy. The independence is the point: a firefighter who sees a counselor through Friends of Firefighters does not have that fact reported to the department. There is no career consequence, no notation in a file, no risk that seeking help will be read as weakness in a promotional context. The services are free, which removes the financial barrier. The services are confidential, which removes the career barrier.
