The film that the domestic arrangement was designed to prepare for did reckon with it — not in the way that anyone would have chosen, but in the way that sustained close contact with wild animals in an inadequate safety environment will eventually produce a reckoning. The production of Roar was the reckoning that the LIFE photographs did not show coming, and the injuries that the production produced were the documentation that the photographs could not provide: what the four-hundred-pound animal in the frame was actually capable of, when circumstances aligned in a particular way.

The three generations represented by the Sherman Oaks household in 1971 have continued, across the decades since the photographs were taken, in directions that reflect both the circumstances of that moment and the larger lives they were each in the process of living.

Tippi Hedren, who was reported in February 2024 to have been diagnosed with dementia, built a career that extended well beyond the Hitchcock films and the Roar project. She appeared in dozens of film and television productions across the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, including a return to the franchise that had made her famous in The Birds II: Land’s End (1994). She starred in the darkly comic Citizen Ruth (1996) and appeared in I Heart Huckabees (2004). She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. She became the face of a Gucci campaign in 2018, at the age of eighty-eight. Her memoir was published in 2016. She was given the Jules Verne Award for her conservation work.
