The Yelcho turned and headed for Punta Arenas, carrying 28 men. Two hours after it appeared in the fog, Elephant Island was behind them, diminishing in the wake. The men on deck watched it go the way the men on shore had watched the James Caird disappear four months earlier — long after it was out of sight, looking at the place where it had been.

Then they turned toward the north. Toward the rest of their lives.
