THE SECOND MARRIAGE
In 1985, Robert Clark married a woman named Delores Miller.
Delores was herself a Lutheran who had been attending the same church as Bob Clark. She was, by the accounts that would emerge after his arrest, a woman who believed entirely in the identity he had presented to her. She knew him as Bob Clark. She had no reason to know him as anything else.
The marriage was, by outward appearances, what a quiet marriage between two reserved middle-aged people might look like. They were both churchgoing Lutherans. They were both, by temperament, private people. They settled into a life together in the community where they had met.
At some point in the mid-1980s, they moved. Robert and Delores Clark relocated to the Richmond, Virginia area — specifically to a neighborhood in Midlothian, Virginia, a suburb southwest of Richmond. They settled into a house in a residential neighborhood. Bob Clark went to work as an accountant at a local accounting firm.
They were, to their neighbors, simply another quiet couple on the street. He was a bit reserved, perhaps, but pleasant enough. He and Delores went to church. They kept their property in reasonable order. They did not throw parties or cause disturbances.
In Virginia, as in Colorado, John List had found the perfect hiding place: a life so ordinary that it generated no interest, no suspicion, and no reason for anyone to look at him twice.
He had been gone from Westfield for more than fifteen years by the time America’s Most Wanted went on the air.
